The Red Deer Walk- day 1

Well if the weather holds true to form, this will be a fantastically  memorable walk! In true Germanic style it is an outstandingly organised hiking trail, which any human with a modicum of orientation could navigate. My sense of orientation was instilled from birth.

A little like the Camino Trail in Spain where one simply follows the yellow Nautilus, here one follows a red diamond and the Sign of the Red Deer – the only hiccup being the Deer is in fact green! As there is a significantly high proportion of German men who are colour blind, I guess it’s not so much of an issue, to Germans or  one was still walking at night. Here I must confess that I did become mildly lost ( if there are indeed degrees of “lostness” ) and faced the prospect of finishing in the dark.

The other totally unanticipated bonus was my accommodation! Again if the first two hotels are to be the standard for the week, then I could spend months in the Schwarzwald living like a decadent movie star. The Germans call them “wellness centres”.

my room hotel oberwiessenhof at Besenfeld

One was greeted at reception by a buxom wench dressed in German national costume who would have passed muster for a Bavarian Beer Hall and made Vivienne jealous. Sadly I have yet to be welcomed by Kurt in leadenhose.
At the hotel in Besenfeld at reception I was asked if I would be in for dinner and breakfast, of course I replied. Here is my reserved table for dinner and breakfast!

The wellnes centres of both hotels were dazzlingly decadent and could have been lifted out of an ancient Roman bathhouse or the public baths at Budapest! Spas, saunas, steam rooms and swimming pool with showes that shot water out of multiple orifices at every few centimeters around the wall!  Marble, slate and terrazzo added a final Greek touch!

So here are a few pictures of the first day -24 km easy! The rest of the week is truely a walk in the woods only about 15 km a day! Even Pamela could cope whilst Michelle would surely approve of the accommodation!

the start!

Leiden

Well it was intermittently sunny! Leiden is a University town and today Wednesday was market day by the Rhine  – a rest day not that we needed a rest! The cycling has not been arduous!

Dubai  airport Again

Some fascinating observations during the inevitable Dubai airport layover:
It’s bigger than last time a mere 6 months ago! An extra runway and a new terminal and refurbishment of the other. This was a welcome discovery as we taxied to the terminal relatively painlessly! Last year we took so long from touch down to airbridge that we has time enough for the cabin crew to serve breakfast whilst taxi-ing.

The number of B777 and A380 lined up on the tarmac is reminiscent of the hundreds of Tiger Moths that rested on the apron of the aerodromes  at the Australian Elementary Flying Training Schools during WWII

The terminal has acres of plastic wooden veneer and an enlarged smoking area thoughtfully designed and situated so that the stench of tobacco smoke permeates a considerable distance into the non smoking areas. Incidentally as a medical specialist I was amazed to learn that Chinese tax free cigarettes apparently do not cause cancer.

Grandma seems to be getting better!

Today she ate a full evening meal! Rissoles and mashed potato then diced peaches! The  video is not  the best quality! Bloody iPhone 4

The only wild life at my house!

Actually I also have many frogs! They are very noisy but in a delightful way. The males croak at the pitch of A natural, the females at B flat! Should there be such a thing as a homosexual frog then I suspect it would go between A Natural and B flat in a sort of trill?

Portugal in March

Plans are well afoot to spend  the month of March 2016 in Portugal.

further suggestions from readers and experienced travellers would be much appreciated.

New wheels, old rider!

Well the OLMO is as new with CURVE carbon wheels and TUNE hubs.  The trusty ZIP 303 were cracked and “bloody dangerous” according to my bike mechanic. So I discussed options with my Financial planner and as is my usual practice, ignored his advice and spent a few thousand dollars!

It goes like the wind and is a sibilant of adjectives: “silky smooth, stable, stiff, speedy and … SILENT”!

its definitely not carbon neutral
